Today i was joined by Katie, Amanda, Michael and Lisa. They had signed up for a walk through Peak Walking Adventures for whom I was working for today. All were ready for a day out in the moorland of the Peak District national park. We had the weather on our side so we set off.
The upper Derwent valley has a wealth of history. From the building of the reservoirs that fuel the towns and cities of the surrounding areas, to how it played its part in military preparation of World War two. Barnes Wallis is a big hint.
We also focused on the geology of the Dark Peak. Explaining the difference between the White and Dark Peak district and how the different rock types occurred.
There is lovely flora in coming through in the lowlands at this time of year. It is great to see the emphasis changing from lichens and liverworts to bright coloured flowers. A good antidote to what seems like a wet spring season in the Peak District.
Thank you for a good day on the hill Lisa, Michael, Amanda and Katey.

My first long walk for quite a while and enjoyed every minute, including the heather romping and the occasional change of plan to suit the conditions. Thanks Matt, I felt safe in your hands and learnt a lot too.
I thoroughly enjoyed today! The only time I’ve walked that kind of distance was on a sponsored walk when I was at school – this was far more fun and I definitely learned a lot more about my surroundings today. A challenging walk – Matt was a great guide and took us off the beaten track – a walk we would never have attempted on our own. Thanks Matt!
