Today i had the company of Colin who contacted myself wanting to explore the Kinder Scout plateau.

I am always very cautious of the weather on any mountain terrain, even terrain i know like the back of my hand. So i (we) were hoping for some good weather.
We were not disappointed!

Starting from Edale in the Peak district we plodded along the Pennine Way until we came to the incline of Jacobs Ladder. Although it looks imposing, this section of ascending to the Kinder Scout plateau is well used even in bad weather.

Once at the top we walked past “Swines back” and “Edale rocks,” rocky gritstone outcrops, and started heading north along the south west edge of Kinder scout to Kinder downfall. Kinder downfall is a peat drenched waterfall of approximately thirty meters of height.
Me and Colin talked about the area surrounding this before heading along the Kinder river to Kinder Gates.

Once at Kinder Gates the navigation to cross the exposed and remote Kinder plateau requires map and compass knowledge, especially in poor weather. Colin, after reading some background information on this was eager to learn so i explained things in a bit more detail to him. Colin was already quite knowledgable.

Once we safely navigated across Kinder Scout it was time to head back down to Edale from the southern edge of the Kinder plateau. Colin described today’s weather to me as “we landed jam side up.”

I think he got it completely right!
