Today i was assisting Michael as he contacted me to help him practice his navigation skills. He heads off to the north of Scotland to walk the impressive Cape Wrath trail in the near future.
Michael demonstrated that he was up for the mental challenge of using the navigation tools i taught him in the morning to locate small features on the map by himself in the afternoon. The navigational “toolbox” as i call it is essential to confidently make decisions whilst walking in difficult terrain and/or bad weather.
A full day of map reading, contour interpretation, timing distances and taking compass bearings was great preparation for Michael’s trail walk.
Mike gave the following comment on my course via email a few days later:
Needed some first class and intense navigation training before a demanding two week trek across Scotland – The Cape Wrath Trail. Contacted Matt and received an immediate response with potential dates for training. Within a week I was in the Peak District doing a one-to-one navigation course run by Matt trekking through difficult terrain with poor visibility to really hone map reading and compass skills. Just what I needed to feel ready for my big trip across Scotland. Would thoroughly recommend the course.
